ETERNAL DRIFT

29 NOVEMBER - 20 DECEMBER 2024

ANNA KOSTRYTSKA | MATTHEW STONE | MARIUS SEIDLITZ

OPENING 29 NOVEMBER  6-8 PM

D Contemporary is delighted to present the final exhibition of the year, Eternal Drift, a group show featuring works by Anna Kostrytska, Mathew Stone, and Marius Seidlitz.

Through a compelling series of paintings, these artists delve into the nature of representation, perception, and identity. Eternal Drift explores representations within representations, embarking on an endless journey that challenges and redefines formalistic boundaries

The exhibition crafts forms that evoke a perpetual cognitive shift, unsettling the perceived hierarchies of the artistic process. In their hands, forms and characters flow seamlessly between formalistic realms, embracing their interconnectedness and blurring the lines between analogue and digital, traditional and contemporary.

At the heart of Eternal Drift lies a profound engagement with the interaction of color and form as a means of developing associative thinking. The core of their explorations is the pursuit of expressing emotion and specific states through these elements, resulting in works that are at once simple and complex. By balancing harmonious yet absurd proportions, the artists invite viewers to grapple with deep questions about identity, beauty, and the self.

The exhibition centers on the complexity of the claims to the self, asking: How much of the self must be denied to achieve recognition? Through this lens, Eternal Drift examines the proportions and needs of people, suggesting that the human form is most truthful when it is bare—when the soul reveals itself in its nakedness

Matthew Stone (born 1982 in London, England) is a multifaceted artist who works across a variety of disciplines, including painting, sculpture, photography, and performance. He is a founding member of the South London art collective !Wowow!, and has been a key figure in shaping counter-cultural movements in London, particularly during the mid-2000s. His influence played a significant role in redefining the East End of London and shifting sub-cultural understanding.

Stone graduated from Camberwell College of Arts in 2004 and quickly made a name for himself with his first solo show, Futurehindsight, at UNION in London in 2007. His figurative practice combines traditional hand-painted brushstrokes with digital techniques, where he paints on clear glass, photographs the strokes, and digitally reconstructs them into unique figures, which are then printed onto linen. This innovative fusion of digital and physical methods has garnered attention both in the art world and on social media, leading to a thriving market for his prints, pins, and T-shirts.

Stone’s work has been featured in critically acclaimed solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally. In the UK, he has shown at prestigious venues such as Tate Britain, the ICA, and the Royal Academy of Art. Internationally, he has exhibited at CHOI&CHOI Seoul, The Hole Los Angeles, The Hole New York, and at the Marrakech Biennale. Stone was also named one of the "Power Players Under 30" by the Sunday Times in 2009.

A frequent collaborator with musician FKA Twigs, Stone created the album cover for her 2019 release Magdalene, a project he worked on alongside creative director Matthew Josephs.

Marius Seidlitz (b. 1985) is an artist and engraver based in Chemnitz, Germany. He studied Fine Arts at Bauhaus University in Weimar and trained as an engraver at the National Engraving School in Suhl, earning his journeyman’s degree in 2008, along with state and federal recognition in his trade. In 2010, he was awarded a grant through the Federal Ministry of Research and Education’s funding program. He has been working as a self-employed artist since that time and further enhanced his skills by completing a course in Craft Industry Design in Weimar in 2012.

Seidlitz’s works are held in private collections in Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Turkey, China, Denmark, France, Austria, Norway, the USA, Australia, and Japan.

Born in 1990 in Kyiv, Anna Kostrytska is an artist based between London and Kyiv.

From 2013 to 2017, she studied at the Creative Institute of Art Modeling and Design named after Salvador Dali, followed by further studies at the Kyiv Academy of Media Arts in 2017–2018. Her early works, including acrylic prints and engravings, laid the groundwork for her exploration of color and form, with a focus on associative thinking as a core element of her artistic process.

She has received international recognition for her work, with several notable solo exhibitions, including "Beyond Triumph and Loss" at The Korshun Art Project in Los Angeles (2023), "Femme Fatale" at the Mironova Foundation in Kyiv (2021), and "Everything Changes, Nothing Disappears" at the Museum of Kyiv History (2020).

Kostrytska has also participated in prominent group exhibitions, such as "Heart Ablaze" at DContemporary Gallery in London (2023), "Becoming a Body of Water" at David Kovats Gallery in London (2023), and "International Woman’s Day Auction" at The Bomb Factory Covent Garden in London (2024). Her works have been featured in major art fairs, including the Contemporary Istanbul Art Fair (2020, 2021) and VOLTA Art Fair in Basel (2021).

In addition to her exhibitions, she was part of the ACME Art Residency in London from 2022 to 2025.
